I know, that you people know, that the more indie your cred the better. It’s simple: the less people listen to it, the more obscure, the more weird, the more “bloody what the hell is noise” music you can get – the better.

I present to you your new genre of tunes, that is so out there it is called Outsider Music. Shyeah. I kid you not.

Bring these tunes with to your next indie friend cred circlejerk and blow people’s minds. I quote Wikipedia: “Outsider music are songs and compositions by musicians who are not part of the commercial music industry who write songs that ignore standard musical or lyrical conventions, either because they have no formal training or because they disagree with formal rules.”

Go find your new indie stardom pedestal now. Here are some examples of Outsider Music.

Woo dissonance! And nonsensical rambling and out of tune rhythms. It is so next level indie. Now, you see I’m still figuring out if these people are intentionally just shitty at making music, or they are intentionally super conceptual? One day My Pal Foot Foot will help. However, for now, they’re so non-commercial, it will be a surefire hit among your conceptual indie friends.

So, I’m going a lot to Aandklas lately and seeing lots of awesome bands, such as Cyberpunkers, the two dirty electro Italian DJ’s, and Machineri, the oozing rock ‘n roll, and of course Haezer

So, me and my friends had a discussion the other day and I’m trying to get as many opinions on this as possible. So, we were trying to figure out what music/band defined the Naughties? Like 60′s were The Beatles, 70′s had Led Zeppelin and The Rolling Stones, 80′s were all about punk and Depeche Mode and 90′s saw the rise of the legendary Nirvana. Ok now, we’re just past the Naughties, but I’m having such a problem trying to figure out what band/artists defined our generation globally.

Mentions were Eminem, Linkin Park, Radiohead and even Muse, but somehow they just aren’t on the caliber as the previous generational bands. If you look at the list of Number one hits in America the Naughties it is completely at a loss of bands. More and more solo artists took the stage.

The only bands that make appearances are Nickelback, Maroon, Crazy Town, Plain White T’s and Coldplay among a very few others. Of course Number hits aren’t an indication of a generational band, but it just gives an indication of the general trend. I mean 2005 must’ve been the most boring year ever. Only 9 tunes. And three of them are from Mariah Carey.

I guess when one look at instant fame shows, ala Idols, thing got focused on instant solo celebrities and collab between musicians in a band aspect grew unpopular. Somehow, I’m not sure that I’m happy that I have the internet to listen to any music I want, but also feel kinda lost without this “epic” generational band. Ok, South Africa had that with Fokofpolisiekar, but I’m talking more globally.

So, I have two questions: What band/group/artist defined your Naughties? Mine personally was probably In Flames. I listened to them throughout the Naughties and still do. Of course there are a lot of other gems, but nothing quite stood with me quite like In Flames. A close second would be Arcade Fire, Gorillaz and any chiptunes, but this was more late Naughties.

Second question, what band/group/artists in the Naughties can be defined as our generation’s biggest musician, comparable to Nirvana? Is it even possible?

Please join in!

This is like the Satan spawn of hard techno. It just goes on and on until it hammers the distortion until your brain bleeds. I reckon this would be cool with lots of leather in a European sex club.

2) Chiptunes

One of my favourite music genres ever. It combines the awesome chip sounds of vintage game consoles and creates this diverse array of raw music. Perhaps you can call it more of a medium as opposed to a genre, but it’s awesome nonetheless. For more check out 8bitpeoples. P.S – My 8bit friends will probably hate me for putting this in the same post as crunkcore.

3) Crunkcore

I’ve linked to this before as a song that will end a party, but I reckon some people dig this, like getting “CRUNK UP IN THIS BUSINESS” while “SCREAMING”. They seem to get a lot of chicks. Kudos to them… I just wish they mixed up two different genres, maybe we need a GangstaPop band, like Miley Cyrus rapping/autotuning/ooh-ing about all the booty they get as tween… wait that’s Justin Bieber.

4) Spacesynth/Italo-Disco

Spacesynth is what the 80′s left behind. The cheese in this music can feed a whole town for years. It’s so delicious and over done that it makes me wonder if it wasn’t some post-modern music movement, kinda like Die Antwoord.

5) Nintendocore

I’ve seen HORSE the band live and they really know how to break your neck headbanging and moshing your brains out. This odd example of more “screaming” plus Nintendo/8bit sounds makes me wanna rip people up in style. There’s a lot more obscure “core” genres out there, but this is by far the most fun.

6) Opera-Glitch-Electro

Local South African band, Lark, makes the awesomest mix of operatic style voices with lots of harmonies filled with glitch electro. I guess you can’t actually call it a genre yet, ’cause it’s totally off the chart and unique. They are definitely one of my favourite acts in South Africa. I’ve seen them live numerous times. Some people find it “too weird”. I say they’re missing the best bunch musicians creating the world’s most creative music.
