Video Games Legitimized by Major Religion

I’ve stumbled on this article on Daily Galaxy. Here’s the deal:

“The aggression that comes out in the videogame satiates whatever desire I might have to express that feeling,” the monk said. “For me, that’s very skillful because when I do that I don’t have to go and hit anyone over the head.”

Does this finally make games “cool”? This is probably unheard of in major religions; truly approving of games. And it’s no peasant, this guy is a Tibetan icon. I like this, ’cause people might stop blaming games for once and see it as a form of stress release. I wonder if the monk’s also waited for Duke Nukem: Forever? Guess that’s the enlightenment they seek? Thinking of monks playing games is really odd. I wonder if they ever attend LANs? Do they talk about Fallout 3 during their meditation breaks [a break from chilling... that's nice]?

Violence ain’t all that bad. Everyone gets frustrated, it’s how you channel it that makes the difference. Hitting hookers in GTA ain’t that bad now, don’t you think?

The Konami Code. The pinnacle of a nerd’s existense. The mecca of cheats. The Wikus van der Merwe of video gaming. The one code to rule them all. The power, the destruction, the potential. With this code any nerd can be anyone: unlimited everything. Some people even immortalize the code on their bodies.

Douglas Adams was wrong he said that the answer to life, the universe and everything is 42; it is in fact up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, b, a. The code which was popularized in the NES classic Contra, has become synonymous with the 8-bit generation of gaming. I wonder if Buddhists strive to be the Konami code? The recession could be solved by typing in the Konami Code on the stock market. More research needs to be done in past applications of the Konami Code. How did Konami know this code? Is this the Lost Code Dan Brown is talking about? I bet Hitler used it, way before nerds made it popular.

You know that time when you were “in one the world” and wanted “time to stand stilll”. It was the Konami Code. It is the all encompassing presence. Omnipresent and omnipotent. Rick Astley channeled the Konami Code when he sang Never Gonna Give You Up. The Force? The Konami code for sure. More people should follow the Konami Code. It solves all the world’s problems.

It even makes websites more interesting. Without the Konami Code you would not have a blue mascot dancing on your screen singing Blue by Eiffel 65.

Thank you Konami Code! I’m eternally grateful. May government R&D develop you further.

Hottest Geek Tattoos Ever

I think I’ve just stumbled into nerd heaven: the art of geeky tatoos. I’m totally flabbergasted at the dedication these people have for being nerdy. If I ever gather enough courage to get a tattoo, it’ll definitely be something along these lines.

A Zelda Triforce tramp stamp. Wow… that’s amazing.There’s a joke in there somewhere about the Link Powerup sound and orgasms.

Mario as a Jedi. Holy shit my brain just vaporised.

Mystifying Myst

I’ve heard so much about Myst, but never got around to play it. I regret to inform purists that I recently jumped into the series at Myst 5. Friends in my flatblock had a copy and I remembered playing the demo a long time ago, which was just insane. Probably the most difficult puzzle game I’ve played in a while. So, me and my flatmate installed a fresh copy and set out to tackle this game together.

We stumbled through the story for the most part in the beginning, really struggling to get the story with over the top emotional dialogue and almost Oscar Wilde-like “The only thing worse than x is, is not being x” kind of writing going on. Really crazy duality involved.

To me and my flatmate’s dismay, we skipped the first two puzzles, because we weren’t sure what we were doing. So we stumbled straight into the demo stage. Wow, what a brain smoothy it was. It is the stage picture above. We struggled for hours trying to figure what this island was all about. We, ultimately, stumbled upon the solution.

However, I found it strange, that this game allows for so much unecessary emergence – it is actually humourous. I would’ve loved to be a developer and just watch a room full of people trying to figure out what to do. I bet some people would even go so far as to count the amount grass follicles in a tuft of grass and correlate that to the symbols on a cave wall. Believe me you get desperate.

I love strange and alien-like landscapes, so this game is surprisingly fun for me, even after that horrendous demo which I couldn’t figure out. Guess it helps to have another person cracking the puzzles.
