I don’t usually write about gigs, because I go to a lot of them, and that means writing too many blogs. Yes, I’m lazy that way.

After my review on Cutting Heads, I was rather amped to hear The Pretty Blue Guns live. They delivered and that’s why I’m writing this post.

The night opened with Stack Shot Jack. I was rather surprised. This trio pulled off quite a good set. They even played a Black Keys cover (which I think only I sang to). These guys only need some more charisma on stage. Will definitely check them out again.

If you close your eyes, you could swear it was Jack White on stage. It’s my 2nd time seeing The Revelators and I quite enjoyed it. They have a nice blend of garage punk vibe going that makes you want headbang and dance at the same time. I don’t think they are everyone’s taste, and I don’t think I’ll be able to listen to them for too long, but for what it was, it was rather fun.

The Pretty Blue Guns opened their set like their album, with the songs Suitcase and Pills. These guys have swagger and perform rather well. They’ve been together as a band for a few years and it shows!

The gig was rather good timing, considering it was Andre Leo’s (frontman of Pretty Blue Guns) birthday as well as blues legend John Lee Hooker. Considering that they played a tune from their legend, John Lee Hooker. It was more proper blues, and a refreshing break from their more rocky stuff!

With “Devil Do”, the sing-along tune, PBG brought some of their friends (and producer) on stage to sing along. Needless to say we all song along too.

My favourite song, Two Blue Birds, was epic, confirming to me that guys are really onto something. Hopefully I can one day say that I saw these guys jam it out in Aandklas. I hope they continue with what they are doing. Holding thumbs for even greater success.

P.S. On another side note. I’m really loving the Stellenbosch/Cape music scene at the moment. The bands are really up to scratch. The SA music industry is growing. Love it.

Totally agree about the SA music scene at the moment. In my opinion the only thing we’re lacking is good producers. Theo’s doing a great job, though.
