The other night after a celebratory afterparty with friends (whom some of them won a local serenade competition) me and a friend trapsied up Merriman Avenue; one of Stellenbosch’s main student arteries. At 3 0′clock in the morning we encountered this. (Oh, yeah I’m totally doing the “to be continued” vibe here).

A fire! A plastic bin fire! A plastic bin fire that is trying to be controlled by students! Being typically student, me and my friend took out our cellphones (she luckily had her camera, thx for the photos Maryke!) and snapped away at the spectacle. A few students in the nearby flat blocks managed to get a hose, but it was too short. So all they did was drool on the fire. Oh, and kept the tree wet.

However, the water got cut and the nearby tree starting catching fire. I was tempted to call my flatmate to come check it out (my flat is two flatblocks to the right), but before it got out of control and “too serious to take pictures and laugh at it”, a firetruck came, all chilled, took out a hose and just pumped two shots of their foamy water solution and poof the fire was out. It was definitely extremely random to see a fire like this and everyone so calm. The fun part was all the students walking past going, “DUDE! Look a fire! Woah… where’s my phone?” I love random occurences like this at an extremly random time.
Also, my friend took this super kiff “I look like I’m in a warzone/post-apocalyptic movie” photo of me.
