District 9 – The Irony
by | Movies | August 17, 2009

district-9-trailerThis iconic image from the new sci-fi sensation, District 9, seems all handy and dandy, right? Amazing even! The sense of grandeur among the dirty townships is a stark contrast… yeah yeah yeah, this movie sounds awesome! Twitter can’t shut-up about it. It’s making me so jealous.

The movie was released last week to many international theatres: the response being immensely positive. Reading the updates on Twitter just affirms that this movie is up there among the best, perhaps even a contender for film of the year! Some dude, can’t remember where, compared it to this generation’s 2001: A Space Oddysey.

So here’s the deal: South Africa only gets to see the movie this weekend (22 August). Can someone say unfair? The movie was shot in South Africa and was made by a South African director, using many South African actors. This movie is basically a South African movie (despite the big Peter Jackson producer title looming above), but the irony still remains. I’m getting so hyped for this movie. I wonder what’s the reason for the delay? Why does South Africa only get this movie a week later? Nu Metro or Ster Kinekor to blame?

Perhaps someone thought the movie might insult some apartheid minds, and tested international waters first, so they can pull the movie it if it’s too offensive. Ok, that might be a stretch, but I want an explanation!

    Internationally funded?

    Who the hell knows.

I’m keeping myself very reserved for this one. Especially with it being compared to 2001 since I find that to be the most overrated drivel of all time.

I’m sure it’ll be great but yeah, reservations are there…and I’m pretty sure I’ve figured out the ending without knowing much about the story.
Hyped movied always make me uneasy. I never know if people are honestly digging it or just responding to the hype.

Well, for one, the movie was funded offshore, so naturally it would be released first overseas. Movies shot in Russia with by Russian directors with Russian actors (but funded by the US) are also released first overseas so it wouldn’t be any different for SA.
That being said, I’m pretty pissed about it too. So amped to see this film. :)

Another reason for the International release first, is exactly THIS. To generate hype, get people talking and excited. And it’s working from the look of things.

Otherwise, awesome blog! Dig it. :)

True that. However, the praise has been going across the board, which much indicate for something! I also try to not hype too much, that’s why I’ve not been reading reviews, checking trailers and such, or rather trying to restrain myself from it. I’m probably going to watch it first thing Friday Morning!

Even if, the movie is not to my liking, it’s in South Africa and made Neill Blomkamp, which will be cool. I guess it tickles my false patriotism.

Yeah, I reckon Peter Jackson organized some funding. Well usually in South Africa important movie releases, coincide with international release dates, but this just passed our radar. Perhaps, because of its “indie” status and people snugged it off as “yeah, South Africa won’t mind seeing later”.

This is a Sony Pictures film and worldwide distribution agreements and release dates are with them. Just because shooting was done here, doesn’t mean it’s automatically in the power of any local entity to dictate release date.

It releases in the U.K. only on 4 September, so don’t feel so disenfranchised :)

Thanks Brian! Ah, yes I get that, but a local cinema can still also dictate their own release dates, right? Not many amazing international raved films get made in South Africa by a South African, so I guess being South African we feel a sense of entitlement to this “masterpiece”.

But now that you put it in perspective versus the UK, phew I’m glad we’re getting it this weekend! Wouldn’t be able to wait any longer!
