Fred from Youtube has reached 1 Million subscribers on his Youtube channel yesterday, 7 April. Becoming the first to a million a subscribers and being the most popular Youtube channel for quite some time now.

Using his trademark squeeky voice, by speeding up the video, he has managed to somehow become the biggest teen sensation on Youtube. Fred Figglehorn, is a fictional character played by Lucas Cruikshank. He is a six year-old on a hyperactive mission. Now, when someone, a 15-year old plays a six year old with a amazingly annoying helium-induced kinda voice, I get so annoyed… and real quick. After just a few seconds I want to start punching someone or bash my head in. This could be great torture.

How in the hell did he get to 1 million subscribers? According to his Youtube channel, his first video was posted 11 months ago, May 2008. So that’s the fastest growing channel on Youtube. Again, with the huge popularity. This is boggling me. What market is falling for this?

On the Wikipedia it cites the 13-17 year old female market, but it should be lower, because you must be 13 to register for Youtube. Now it starts to make a little bit more sense. The great thing about Fred is (dare I say a great thing) that it proves my theory of “things that are really good and popular” (still need find a good word for it). Things that are really good and popular usually have an antithesis crowd: either you despise it or absolutely love it. The middle ground never gets very far.

I guess the popularity if this kid just makes me a little bit jealous, because it seems undeserved. Also he really annoys me. If you can sit through a whole video, kudos to you, or you are this girl:

Yes. Why?

I find him highly annoying and very unfunny. But I have to give him kudos. He has managed to find a market which I didn’t know existed and that I don’t get.

It will be interesting to see what new markets will be exploited in the coming years.
